    general information

    New Tanzania Entry Requirement

From 1 October 2026, Tanzania requires international visitors to carry government-approved inbound travel insurance, costing US$44 per adult. It applies whether you are on safari, climbing Kilimanjaro, visiting Zanzibar, or combining all three.

This policy is separate from any travel insurance you already hold, and only insurance from the single approved vendor is accepted.

    What the policy covers

The policy is valid for up to 92 days and allows multiple entries during the coverage period. Cover includes:

    • Emergency medical expenses
    • Emergency medical evacuation
    • Medical repatriation
    • Lost or damaged checked luggage

This insurance is designed to satisfy Tanzania's entry requirement. It is not a replacement for a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

    Where to buy it

A policy based on your first point of entry can cover travel across both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, subject to the policy terms.

Entering mainland Tanzania first (such as Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam): buy through Tanzania's National Insurance Corporation at inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz. It can also be bought on arrival at designated entry points, but buying beforehand avoids airport delays.

Entering Zanzibar first: use Zanzibar's system at inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz.

Payment can be made online with Visa or Mastercard.

Remember: this insurance is mandatory and complements your existing travel insurance, so add it to your pre-trip checklist. Planning a trip? Explore our Tanzania safari guide or speak with our team.
